Jennifer Whelihan, Economic Development and Communication Professional with over 18 years experience, is known for her expertise in business consulting and entrepreneurship, as well as her diverse work in new media, and public, community and government relations. Her exceptional background has led her to career positions as a television and print journalist, media director for the Florida House of Representatives, press secretary on political campaign work, communication director for a leading research facility and other non-profit organizations, certified business consultant for USF Small Business Development Center and currently adjunct instructor at The University of Tampa and Hillsborough County Economic Development Manager.
Jennifer is a proud Seminole and received her Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Media Communication and Master of Arts in Interactive and New Communication Technology degrees from Florida State University. While at FSU she received the prestigious Florida State University Seminole Leadership Award.
Bilingual in English and Spanish, Jennifer is an Honorary Chair and past president for the Hispanic Professional Women’s Association in Tampa Bay and an appointed council member on the Sheriff’s Hispanic Advisory Council (SHAC). She received leadership excellence awards from both organizations.
In addition, Jennifer served as Vice-Chair of the Hillsborough County Commission on the Status of Women (COSW), board member of USF Research Foundation Council of Professionals, The Centre for Women, Empath Choices for Care, Tampa Bay Seminole Club, The Iron Yard Technology Academy, Friends of the Tampa Museum of Art, American Advertising Federation (AAF), and faculty advisor for the Advertising Student Association at University of Tampa. She currently serves as Board Director for Synapse Inc., the Florida-Israel Business Accelerator (FIBA); and is a member of International Economic Development Council (IEDC), Florida Venture Forum, TiE Tampa Bay, Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association (AFCEA), and Prospera TAC. Her leadership skills provided the opportunity to be nominated and selected for Leadership Hillsborough 2007, Leadership Tampa 2018, and Hillsborough County’s Leadership Program Backstage Pass 2019.
Jennifer was selected as the 2017 recipient of the NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. She was honored to be recognized as a finalist in the Tampa Bay Business Journal 2015 BusinessWoman of the Year Awards. Most recently, Jennifer was selected as a 2019 Tampa Bay Inno on Fire winner; 2019 TiE Tampa Bay’s TiETAN Community Champion Award; as well as an award recipient of the 2018 Tampa Bay Business Journal’s 40 Under 40.
